Syeda Zakia Noor Lipi, Awami League candidate for Kishoreganj-1 by-polls, has been declared winner uncontested on Sunday.
The parliamentary constituency was previously represented by her brother late public administration minister Syed Ashraful Islam.
Returning Officer and Kishoreganj Deputy Commissioner Sarwar Morshed Chowdhury declared the ruling party candidate winner as all other aspirants withdrew candidacy for the constituency.
“The Election Commission has been notified about the development and the decision would be gazetted within two or three more days,” he told reporters today.
According to the election officials, Ganatantry Party contender Bhupen Chandra Bhowmik Dolon withdrew nomination on Sunday and Jatiya Party’s Mostain Billah on Saturday.
Earlier on February 3, the returning officer had rejected their nomination papers during scrutiny, said Mohammad Tajul Islam, Assistant Returning Officer and Kishoreganj Election Commissioner.
Later, both of them appealed against the official’s decisions to the EC and got back their candidacy.
Election to the seat was slated for February 28 since it fell vacant following the death of Syed Ashraf just three days after he won the December 30 general elections.
However, the former Awami League general secretary could not take oath.
Syed Ashraf served five consecutive terms as the parliament member for this constituency.
