Awami League president and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been finalized as the ruling party candidate to contest the December 30 polls from Gopalganj-3 constituency.
“Our party chief Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has decided to run in the election from Goplaganj-3 constituency,” Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said while announcing the party’s final list at Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi office in Dhaka on Friday.
Earlier during the nomination submission, Sheikh Hasina had submitted her nomination paper to contest in Rangpur-6 besides the Gopalganj-3.
However, the ruling party chief let her party’s another heavyweight contender Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, the Speaker of the incumbent national parliament, as the latter had also submitted her nomination papers from Rangpur-6 constituency to contest the polls.
“Now Speaker of the Parliament Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will contest from the Rangpur-6 constituency,” Quader told reporters.
So this is the first time, the premier is going to contest the polls from only one seat in national election.
The ruling Awami League has finalised 16 single candidate so far.
Some other heavyweight candidates the ruling party finalized today are – Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Kishoreganj-1, former home minister M K Alamgir, Chandpur-1.
