Deputy Minister for Education Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel on Saturday said that only Shah Ahmed Shafi himself is responsible for his recent comment on girls’ education.
“It’s his personal opinion. He does not hold any executive position regarding implementation of the country’s education policy or in the education sector,” the minister told reporters while exchanging views with them this morning.
The Hefajat-e-Islam Ameer has exercised his right to freedom of speech, said minister Nowfel adding, “As a citizen of the country, he has come up with his own analysis. However, his analysis is not consistent with the country’s policy.”
Asked about changes in textbooks, the deputy minister said, “We initiated the criticism that the very stability of the society will be affected in the long run if textbook contents lead to division or communalism. These must not be inculcated in the tender minds of the students. The Awami League believes in secular politics.”
He also said if education system is communalized, then the country will have to suffer from great jeopardies.
Hefajat chief Shah Ahmed Shafi on Saturday urged country’s parents to promise that they will not send their daughters to school.
He said girls should not receive schooling beyond grade IV or V because education would make them disobedient.
