Maksim V Elchishchev, head of Russian state nuclear agency Rosatom has said that the completion of Rooppur power plant has been delayed by a year but other works of the project are running on schedule.
He also said that Rooppur power plant will receive an upgrade from the previously offered VVER 1000 reactor to the new VVER 1200 reactor. This would also increase the power plants capacity to 2400MW from the previous capacity of 2000MW.
Adding that the VVER 1200 is a new generation reactor, he said that it will provide more safety and security features to avoid any accidents.
He has also slammed speculations of disagreements between the two countries.
Maksim is now visiting in order to supervise the preparations before implementing the project.
During a press briefing at the SonargaonHotel, he said that commercial operation the power plant would begin from 2022 but it also depends on the signing of the general contract of the project.
Following the agreement, a series of contracts were signed in phases between Rosatom and the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) to implement the project.
“A feasibility study of the Rooppur NPP had been completed and already has been submitted to the government for the next course of action,” added Maksim.
Maksim, also the Vice President of the NIAEP, the foreign project implementation wing of Rosatom, said that negotiations are still going on between the two sides to sign the general contracta and once it is signed the work will be carried out in phases.
“The construction cost also is yet to be determined and it will be fixed through negotiation,” added Maxim.
