The RMG workers on Friday staged demonstration in Dhaka rejecting the government’s decision to raise their minimum monthly wage to Tk 8,000.
Several hundred garment workers under the banner of ‘Garments Workers’ Trade union Centre’ a platform of RMG workers, staged a sit-in in front of the National Press Club around 11:30 am,.
They also brought out a precession protesting the government decision.
They demanded a minimum monthly wage Tk 16,000 instead of Tk 8,000 during the demonstration.
The government on Thursday fixed Tk 8000 as the minimum wage for the readymade garments workers.
The announcement is a 51 percent increase over current minimum wage, Tk 5,300.
State minister for labour and employment Md Mujibul Haque announced this at a press briefing at his secretariat office.
The minimum wage had previously been set on Dec 1, 2013.
