International Press Institute (IPI) has urged Bangladesh government to take necessary steps against the attacks on the country’s journalists.
The institution also wrote to the PM mentioning their deep concern over the arrest of photographer Shahidul Alam and demanded his immediate release.
Earlier on Sunday night, Detectives, reportedly from DMP’s Detective Branch (DB), detained Shahidul Alam, Managing Director of Drik Gallery and Chairman of Pathshala South Asian Media after his statement through video conferencing with international media house Al Jazeera, where he told that government forces are attacking students during their peaceful protests.
IPI, in its letter, also reminded PM Hasina of journalists’ contribution towards the Liberation War of 1971 and urged her to ensure the safety of journalists.
IPI is a Vienna based institution which is composed with editors and journalists from all over the world. Over the years it has been working as a recognized advisor to UN, Unesco and Council of Europe.
