The Election Commission has said it will not deploy the army in the upcoming city corporation elections in Gazipur and Khulna.
EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said police and the Rapid Action Battalion and border guards are enough to maintain the law and order in the election areas.
The commission’s decision came against a backdrop of BNP’s long-standing demand for the army deployment in the upcoming election.
“The past local elections have become successful with the help of law-enforcement agencies. The upcoming election will also be successful,” Ahmed said.
An EC team led by Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda held a two-hour meeting with top officials of law-enforcement and other government agencies ahead of Gazipur and Khulna city corporations polls to be held on May 15.
