Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya on Wednesday said that the government would take tougher action against people who are involved in cutting hills illegally.
The authorities concerned have been asked to remain alert to check hill cutting to avoid any disaster, said the minister in a workshop on “Landslide in hilly areas and creating awareness” at the BIAM auditorium in Dhaka, said an official release.
Secretary of the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Md Shah Kamal, Director of Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) Ahmedul Haque, Deputy Commissioner Md Kamal Hossain, people representatives of local government bodies, among others, were present at the workshop with Additional Secretary of Disaster Management Ministry Md Mohsin in the chair.
Local administration and authorities were asked by the minister to shift those families living in risky hilly areas to safer places.
Minister Maya laid emphasis on creating awareness on hill cutting to avert any human- induced disaster including landslide.
While presenting the keynote paper at the workshop, Md Mohsin highlighted adverse consequences of hill cutting.
“If hill cutting does not stop, the environment will be damaged severely,” said the additional secretary.
