Law Minister Anisul Huq on Tuesday said Barrister Mainul Hosein has been arrested for what he said to journalist Masuda Bhatti, not for political reasons.
“Mainul Hosein used to say many things against the government even before the formation of Oikyafront, but we never arrested him for that,” said the minister while responding to a query at a program of Bangladesh Political Science Association (BPSA) at Dhaka University’s Social Science Faculty.
He said that the ‘shameless’ statement by the former caretaker government adviser was not insulting to Journalist Masuda Bhatti alone, rather it was insulting to all women, said the minister.
Barrister Mainul Hosein was arrested last night from the Uttara residence of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Rab) chief ASM Abdur Rab in a case filed by Mili Maya Begum for calling female journalist Masuda Bhatti ‘characterless’.
Meanwhile, Awami League General Secretary and Road, Transport and Bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said Mainul was arrested over his personal crime not for his involvement in politics.
