Awami League mayoral runner AHM Khairuzzaman Liton has won the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) elections by defeating his rival BNP candidate Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul by a considerable margin.
According to results of the total 138 polling centres, Liton secured a total of 1,65,050 votes while his nearest contestant Bulbul got 77, 690 votes.
Multiple allegations of vote rigging by ruling part men and boycotts along with dispersed violence have marred the simultaneous city corporation elections in Rajshahi, Barishal and Sylhet.
Ballot collection started in 325 polling centres in three cities at 8am and ended at 4pm.
Till the filing of the report, ballot counting began in most of the polling centres, expect the ones where voting were suspended.
Election Commission Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed told at a press meet at Dhaka in the afternoon that there were scattered incidents, but the election was conducted fairly.
Magistrates had to halt voting in one polling centre in Barishal and two in Sylhet over evidences of irregularities and forced rigging.
Election Commission officials said more information about the curtained poll centres would be announced after additional information is received.
“There is no reason to be either satisfied or dissatisfied with the election environment,” the EC secretary said in response to a question.
He added that the evidences do not match with the allegations made by some candidates. However, he mentioned that there were scattered incidents among councillor aspirants in Barishal.
“There were some problems in Sylhet, but it went well in Rajshahi,” Helaluddin added.
