A Dhaka Custom House Preventive Team has detained a Japanese national possessing 11 kilogrammes of gold from a flight of Regent Airways at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on early Saturday.
Kengo Shibata, a Japanese national, has been identified as the detainee, said Mohammad Sydul Islam, assistant commissioner of customs.
Tipped off, the team body searched Kengo Shibata when he was crossing green channel at the airport around 12:40am and found 11 gold bars.
Each of the gold bars weighed 1 kg, the AC said.
The Japanese national flew into Dhaka on a Regent Airways flight coming from Singapore.
The market price of the seized gold is approximately Tk 5.50 crore, he added.
