A Hindu devotee was hacked to death on Friday at Gopalganj’s Tungipara.
‘Sadhu’ Parmananda Roy, hailing from South Basurhia village, was a devotee of Rasraj Thakur of Shree Shree Rai Rasraj Asram.
His son Dayal Roy said his father had gone to the Gimadanga Bazaar on Friday afternoon. On his way back, one Shariful Sheikh chased him with a sharp weapon.
Dayal Roy said Shariful stabbed his father on his hand and lower abdomen. After he collapsed on the street, the attacker pierced his back with the weapon.
Locals rescued Parmananda and took him to the nearby health complex. Later he was shifted to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday noon.
Tungipara police OC Md Mahmudul Haque said, “Shariful has been arrested in connection with the incident. Police suspect he has some mental problem, as was apparent from his behavior.”
The OC, however, could not pinpoint the reason behind the murder.
Police on Saturday night arrested the accused of the murder.
According to Dayal, his father was a respected and well-known man in the area.
