BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has demanded a ‘level-playing field’ for all political parties for the upcoming general election to be successful.
The senior BNP leader came up with the demand while speaking at the Jatiya Oikyafront rally in Rajshahi on Friday.
Elaborating on his demand, Fakhrul said, “Our words are very clear: a level-playing field must be created and equal rights must be given to all political parties. Begum Khaleda Zia must be released. Otherwise, no election will be acceptable.”
The veteran BNP leader also called upon the supporters and activists to wage a movement to meet the demands of Jatiya Oikyafront.
Moreover, Fakhrul trashed the election schedule and said it will not be accepted unless political prisoners including Khaleda Zia are released.
Calling upon the crowd, Fakhrul said that Jatiya Oikyafront has been formed in line with the directive of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to restore democracy in the country and to ensure people rights to vote freely.
Oikyafront leaders held meeting with the prime minister and placed its seven-point demand. “But all our efforts have gone in vain,” he said.
“We said the dialogue will not be successful if Khaleda Zia is not freed from jail. Now, we will have to meet our demands by forging a collective movement,” the BNP leader said.
Meanwhile, Dr Kamal Hossain, chief of the alliance, did not join the planned rally due to high fever.
The event headed by Mizanur Rahman Minu, a member of the BNP chairperson’s advisory council, started at 2pm.
BNP leaders Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Moudud Ahmed and Mirza Abbas, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal-JSD President ASM Abdur Rab, Krishak Sramik Janata League President Abdul Kader Siddique and Oikya Front leader Mahmudur Rahman Manna attended the programme.
