Eight members of a family, including four children, were killed in a fire incident in Armannagar area of Joypurhat town on Wednesday night.
The deceased have been identified as Dulal Hossain, 71, his wife Momena Begum, 62, their son Abdul Momin, 48, his wife Parina Begum, 38, and their four children – Bristi, 14, twins Hasi, Khushi aged 12 and one and a half years old son Taimul Islam Noor.
According to police and fire service and civil defence, the fire broke out at the tin-roofed house from an electric short circuit around 9:30pm.
None of the victims could come out of the house as the main gate was locked.
On information, fire service and civil defence units rushed to the spot and doused the flame after four hours of frantic effort and rescued the victims. However, three of them had already passed away by then.
Five others with severe burn injury were admitted to Joypurhat Modern Hospital but doctors referred them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn unit as their condition was deteriorating.
However, they breathed their last at the DMCH in the early hours on Friday.
Meanwhile, three probe bodies were formed by police, fire service and civil defence, and the district administration to look into the tragic incident. They were asked to submit their reports within three working days.
