A violent clash between pro-government Bangladesh Chhatra League and opposition Jamaat-e-Islami’s student front Islami Chhatra Shibirat at Rajshahi University on Tuesday left at least four students wounded with bullets and 15 others injured.
Six members of the Proctorial Board were also reportedly “harassed” when they tried to calm down the situation.
The injured students were admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH). Two of them were BCL activists, one general student while the rest were Shibir men.
Police and witnesses said, nearly 60 RU unit Shibir men gathered in front of Shahidullah Arts Building around 11:30 am to take out a procession. Seeing the Shibir gathering at Arts Faculty, the BCL activists, equipped with firearms and other lethal weapons, took positions at different points of the campus and at one stage swooped on Shibirites, triggering a chase and counter-chase which soon turned into a violent clash.The clash sent a wave of panic throughout the campus, sending the general students and university staff running helter-skelter for cover.
The warring groups exchanged at least 50 gunshots. “At least 50 gunshots were heard during the midday mayhem,” said a student.
As Motihar police failed to control the situation, additional police were called in who then swung into action. They police finally quelled the situation in the afternoon.
The injured were identified as Saifuddin Yahia, Nabiul Islam, Mobarak Hossain, Zahurul Islam and Nipun of Shibir, Akheruzzaman Takim and Tuhinul Islam Tuhin of BCl and Al Amin, a general student.
