Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has stated that ruling Awami League is pondering restructuring its student wing – Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) – in a bid to ensure quality leadership in the organization.
Quader, also general secretary of Awami League, made the statement responding to a query after addressing a programme organised by the party’s publicity affairs sub-committee at the Institution of Engineers’ Bangladesh in Dhaka Friday noon.
Confirming that the ruling party is thinking about reshuffling BCL ahead of its national council, Quader said, “Our leader Sheikh Haisna has instructed us to turn over a new page with Chhatra League. It will be a new model in terms of creating quality leadership. Just wait and see.”
The Minister’s comments comes at a time when a video clip of Chittagong City BCL general secretary Nurul Azim Rony assaulting a man inside a room for extortion has gone viral.
The video drew BCL heavy flak as it exposed the levels of moral degradation within the ruling party’s student front.
“Whoever it is, either Chhatra league or Awami League, our party stance is very clear, no one will be spared after committing misdeeds. Our leader Sheikh Hasina is also on rigid stance against such offence,” said Quader, when asked about Rony’s incident.
