The ruling Awami League has achieved a victory in Khulna City Corporation polls as its mayoral candidate Talukdar Abdul Khaleque got 1,74,851 votes while the BNP candidate Nazrul Islam Monju bagged 1,09,251 votes.
The total number of voting centers in the city corporation polls was 289. However, three of them have been shut due to irregularities.
There are around five lakh voters in this city corporation are while voters’ turnout was 62.19 percent, according to returning officer Yunus Ali.
Around 2:30am on Wednesday, Yunus made an unofficial announcement from the control room at Divisional Women’s Sport Complex in the city’s Sonadanga area that confirms Talukdar Khaleque’s triumph.
After the voting ends, BNP candidate Monju alleged of huge rigging at 101 centres and demanded re-election there.
After the confirmation of the triumph in the city polls, Talukdar Khaleque pledged to work for development for the city corporation and its people.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, the Secretary of the Election Commission, Helaluddin Ahmed said the commission is satisfied and happy with Khulna City Corporation election as it was mostly held in a peaceful manner.
