Ruling Awami League has begun selling nomination papers to interested candidates for the upcoming by-election of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).
Two candidates — Rasel Asheki and Adom Tamiji Huq — willing to contest the polls under the banner of Awami League collected nomination papers on Saturday thus kicking off the nomination papers sale process of the ruling party.
Issuing a press release on Saturday, AL confirmed that Rasel and Adom collected the nomination papers from party president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office.
Sources at the party said that Atiqul Islam, former-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), will collect the nomination papers this evening.
It is expected that AL is likely to nominate Atiqul Islam while the BNP is expected to pick Tabith Awal, who ran against AL contender Annisul in the previous election.
The mayor post of DNCC fell vacant on November 30 when its mayor Annisul Huq sadly passed away at a hospital in London where he was undergoing treatment.
The by-election to the vacant mayor post of the Dhaka North City Corporation will be held on February 26, 2018.
Elections in the 36 new wards, which have been included in DNCC and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), will also be held on the day.
The CEC also announced that the deadline for filing nomination is January 18.
Then the nominations will be scrutinised on January 21 and 22.
The deadline to withdraw candidacy is January 29.
Notably, a by-election must be held within 90 days of the seat falling vacant, as per the local government (City Corporation) laws.
On April 28, 2015, Awami League candidate Annisul Huq won the election for the mayor post of DNCC.
