A total of 235 Additional Superintendents of Police (ASP) have been promoted to Superintendent of Police (SP) posts.
According to recent circulars issued by the government, 230 ASPs were given promotion to supernumerary Grade V posts. The five others were given regular promotion.
Supernumerary is a British-era formula for promoting the administration cadres which allows the additional promotion when there are no posts vacant in the department’s top tiers, the administration comes up with an in-situ solution.
However, even after being promoted to upper grade, the in-situ officials continue to hold the same office and perform the same duties.
Earlier on July 4, the police headquarters sent a proposal to the home ministry saying that ‘competent officials’ have been serving in the same positions for a long time as suitable posts were not created at the upper level of police.
