To celebrate the World Egg Day 2017, the Egg Fair was organised at the Krishibid Institute in Khamarbari on Friday, where chaos ensued and the fair was called off.
Thousands of people thronged the Egg Fair venue in Dhaka’s Khamarbari area to buy eggs but had to go empty handed.
The fair was scheduled to be held from 10:00am to 1:00pm. However, within 20 minutes from the beginning all the egg supplies exhausted.
The lack of supplies angered the crowd and then they started vandalizing makeshift shops at the fair venue.
The agitated crowd also shouted slogans against the organizers. Afterwards police had to step in to control the excited mob.
Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council in collaboration with the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) organized the fair.
One department official said the organizers had no idea that the fair would get such a huge reception.
This reception enabled them to predict the reception and as a result they will organize the fair at a larger scale next time.
At the fair, eggs were sold at Tk 3 only and one person was allowed to buy 90 eggs. Hoping to get eggs at such a low price thousands gathered at the fair.
