An alleged suicide bomber died in a blast outside a camp of the Rapid Action Battalion in Dhaka on Friday noon.
The explosion injured a RAB personnel. The incident happened outside a makeshift camp located near the Haji Camp at Ashkona.
“This might have been a suicide bombing,” said Airport Police Station OC Noor-e-Azam.
“There is a place for doing Waju (ablutions) next to the RAB camp. The explosion happened there just before Jumma salat around 1:15 pm. We have started investigation.”
Later, Mufti Mahmud Khan, legal and media wing Director of RAB, said, “The suicide attacker targeted our camp. Two of our officials have been injured.”
The assault comes only two days after Islamic State (IS) called for suicide attacks in Bangladesh, and one day after two militants of New JMB group blew themselves up to evade arrest by the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit during a raid in Chittagong’s Sitakunda.
RAB is saying it cannot be determined as yet if the bomber was a member of any militant group. However, he was wearing a cap and a black punjabi.
Mahmud Khan said, “The attacker trespassed into the territory of our under-construction headquarters crossing the wall during Jumma prayers.”
“RAB officers, who were on duty at the gate, challenged the attacker. The man seemed confused while talking to the RAB men and moved as to leave the place. At that time, he detonated his suicide vest, leaving himself dead and two RAB officers injured,” the RAB spokesman added.
The injured officers – Lance Corporal Mizan and Constable Arif – were rushed to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital.
After cordoning the area off, RAB’s bomb disposal team recovered a fresh handmade bomb attached to the attacker’s body.
Later, when RAB personnel were collecting evidences from the spot, a black travel bag was found near the body of the suicide attacker.
However, no leaflet or document were been found on the attacker.
