The Detective Branch of police (DB) Tuesday sought permission to prosecute columnist and activist Farhad Mazhar and his wife Farida Akhter for allegedly giving false statement before the court.
Police also submitted the final report in the case filed over the abduction of Farhad Mazhar.
DB Inspector Mahbubul Haque submitted the final report to the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate in Dhaka.
The information and statement given by Farhad Mazhar and his wife Farida Akter to the magistrates and police were found to be false and fabricated, said the report.
He had sought the court’s permission to take legal actions against Farhad Mazhar and Farida Akhter for ‘filing a case with misinformation’.
The court has fixed Dec 7 for hearing the matter.
Law enforcement agencies found Farhad Mazhar on a Dhaka bound bus of Hanif Paribahan at Noapara in Jessore on July 3, more than 18 hours after he had gone missing.
On July 4, while submitting his judicial statement, Farhad said several unidentified men had forced him into a microbus and blindfolded him minutes after he came out of his Adabor residence that day to buy medicines.
Farhad’s wife filed the case with Adabor Police Station in connection with the incident.
Later, at a press conference, Farida said she had received several calls from Farhad asking her to manage Tk 30-35 lakh as ransom.
