Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan confirmed that the board had received a letter from head coach Chandika Hathurusingha during the recent tour of South Africa.
Papon held a press conference in the Beximco office on Thursday evening and said Hathurusingha had submitted his resignation letter and will be joining his native Sri Lanka cricket team.
“I received a letter from him saying that he does not want to continue. Can’t remember exactly when it was, but it was definitely before the ODI series, before October 15,” the BCB president said in the press conference.
Hathurusingha’s contract with the BCB was till the 2019 World Cup in England.
However, if the Sri Lankan coach decides that he does not want to continue with the Tigers, then the BCB has nothing to do, added Papon in the press conference.
“We cannot force someone who does not want to stay. But, we will talk to him later this month and see if there is something that can be done,” he said.
Hassan commented that media pressure may have had something to do with the decision.
Papon alleged that whether the team is winning or losing, Hathurusingha was being criticized.
“Maybe I would have done the same thing if I was in his place. I think all of you will be happy if he goes, but it would have been better if he stayed longer,” Papon said pointing to journalists.
