Businessmen have blocked the road adjoining Dhaka New Market to protest the second storied extension of the market.
Hundreds of businessmen and workers gathered in the busy Nilkhet intersection on Monday 12pm. They came out in groups and demonstrated in the streets, creating a traffic gridlock in one of the busiest intersections of the city.
Thousands of commuters were in a gridlock on four sides of the intersection, creating huge traffic congestion in most parts of the city.
OC of New Market Police Station, Atikur Rahman told Ittefaq that the New Market Owner’s Association had decided to extend the market to two floors following a High Court Order.
The businessmen have been protesting the decision for long, alleging that the business atmosphere of the age-old market will be ruined if it is extended.
Businessmen Association’s president Shahin and General Secretary Mahbubur Rahman lifted off the protests after local MP Fazle Nur Taposh assured to look into the matter.
