Members of Customs Intelligence have arrested a man with 347gm of gold at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.
The arrestee was identified as Mahbubul Alam, a native of Chhagalnaiya upazila of Feni district. He had returned from Dubai.
Acting on a tip-off, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) arrested Mahbubul when he was passing through the green channel of the airport.
His flight EK 584 landed at the airport at 11:20pm.
At first Mahbubul denied the allegation of carrying illegal gold during the primary interrogation. Later, they seized his rechargeable LED light, and discovered that a 248gm gold disc was hidden inside.
Four gold bangles were also found in his pocket, weighting 99gm, confirmed Moinul Khan, the director general (DG) of the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID).
Mahbubul confessed that he melted the gold and hid it in the LED light to avoid customs officials.
