The point-to-point inflation in September last has increased to 6.12 from 5.53 percentage point in the same month of the previous year, according to the latest data of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
“The general point-to-point inflation rate was 6.12 percentage point in September,” said Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal while releasing the monthly consumer price index (CPI) after the ECNEC meeting at the ERD conference room on Tuesday.
The general point-to-point inflation rate was 5.89 percent in August.
The Planning Minister also informed that the inflation rate in the first quarter (July-September) of the current fiscal year was recorded at 5.86 percent which was 5.43 percent in the same period of fiscal year 2016-17.
“Recent flood and countrywide heavy rainfall have disrupted production. The negative surge in the supply change has pushed the inflation slightly up. However, it will come down again soon,” the minister said, expressing hopes that the inflation will be within the target of the fiscal plans.
At the rural level, the point-to-point inflation in September was recorded 6.21 percent which was 4.63 percent in the same period of previous fiscal.
On the other hand, the quarterly (July-September) inflation at the rural level stood at 5.84 percent this year and it was 4.53 percent in the same quarter of fiscal 2016-17.
However, the urban level inflation in September was 5.95 percent compared to 7.21 percent in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
However, the quarterly (July-September) inflation in urban level in this fiscal was counted at 5.91 percent which was 7.12 percent in the same period of last financial year.
The BBS statistics showed that prices of some food and non-food items like rice, meat vegetables, milk and milk processed food, garment, energy and light, house rent, furniture and household items, medicare services, transport and education items have increased in the first quarter (July-September) of this fiscal year compared to the fourth quarter (April-June) of the previous fiscal year.
