Bangladesh Coast Guard rescued 40 boatmen and fishermen, who were abducted by pirates, during an operation in the Meghna River near Hatia in Noakhali on Friday morning.
Members of the Coast Guard also arrested fifteen robbers during the drive.
“20 boatmen and 20 fishermen were abducted by the robbers from Kutubdia in Monpura two days ago,” said Lt Borhan, Commander of Coast Guard in Hatia.
Acting on a tip-off, a team of the Coast Guard conducted the drive, and found the abducted boatmen, fishermen and the robbers in Char Gangi area.
“Six machetes and 13 rounds of bullets were also recovered from the kidnappers,” Lt Borhan added.
Lt Borhan further said that eight more firearms were cast into the river by the pirates sensing their presence.
“We are trying to recover those as soon as possible,” he said.
