A man was killed and at least 20 others injured when a clash broke out between rival groups over establishing supremacy at Khalia village in Goplaganj Sadar upazila on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Touhid Mollah (40), a resident of the area and supporter of a faction.
Saparul Alam Tika, the newly elected chairman of Jalalabad Union, and his rival Mitul had long been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy, say police.
On Friday morning, the supporters of Saparul and Mitul locked into an altercation as a sequel to the enmity.
At one stage, both groups attacked each other with various types of lethal weapons, leaving Touhid Mollah, a supporter of Mitul group, dead on the spot.
Of the 20 injured, ten were taken to Gopalganj General Hospital while the others were given first aid.
