Out-of-favor all-rounder Nasir Hossain and pacer Shafiul Islam has been called up to the Bangladesh squad for the first Test against Australia.
The news of their selection was circulating in the media since the Australia tour of Bangladesh was given the green light.
Later on, they were named in the preliminary squad that was submitted to the BCB President for approval.
Bangladesh Cricket Board chief selector Minhajul Abedin confirmed their comeback while announcing the final squad for the first Test against the Aussies on Saturday.
Nasir played the last of his 17 international Test matches against South Africa in 2015 whereas pacer Shafiul’s last match was against England in October 2016.
Meanwhile, left-handed batsman Mominul Haque will be off the team for the first time.
The first match of Bangladesh’s two-match Test series against Australia will begin on August 27 in Dhaka.
Bangladesh squad for first test:
Tamim Iqbal Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Mehedi Hasan, Sabbir Rahman, Mossadek Hossain, Mustafizur Rahman, Liton Das, Shafiul Islam, Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Nasir Hossain.
Bangladesh’s long awaited Test series against Australia is knocking at the door as it will be started from 27th August in Mirpur and the Kangaroos have already reached Dhaka on Friday.
It will be a huge series for Bangladesh as they are playing Test against Australia after 11 long years. There were so many uncertainties for this series but everything is fixed now.
Mahmudullah Riyad and Mominul Haque have been left out from the 14-man squad. Mahmudullah was excluded from Bangladesh’s last Test squad against Sri Lanka. On the other hand, Mominul was in the team but he didn’t play that match.
Nasir was first dropped from the ODI squad against Zimbabwe in 2014. Later he also lost his place in the Test squad and did not play a single game in the ICC World Twenty20 in India with Sabbir Rahman taking over his role.
Moreover, Mosaddek’s arrival in the team made the job even harder for him. He last played a Test match in August 2015 against South Africa in Dhaka. But his consistent performance in the recently concluded domestic season and Mosaddek’s eye injury have opened the door of national team again.
Meanwhile, Shafiul has also been consistent in the domestic arena and he performed brilliantly in the first practice match at Chittagong. He last played a Test match against England but was laid low thereafter due to an injury picked up in the Bangladesh Premier League.
A few days ago, a member of the team management on request of anonymity told Cricbuzz, “We just don’t want to disrupt the winning combination. We are trying to make sure that we have all our options and so we had included Nasir. We have to keep a back-up of Mossadek as still there are some kind of uncertainty due to his eye.”
On the other hand, Liton Kumar Das is an auto choice in the 14-man squad as a back-up keeper is must. He may be selected into the playing XI but for that Mushfiq has to play only as a batsman.
