At least twelve people were injured when a clash broke out between two factions of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of ruling Awami League, in Dhaka University on Thursday.
According to witnesses, the clash broke out between the supporters of the university’s Salimullah Muslim Hall Chhatra League’s President Tahsan Ahmed Rasel and General Secretary Mehedi Hassan Tapash.
The clash between the supporters of Rasel and Tapash broke out in the hall premises at around 11:30 pm on Thursday, said the residents of the hall.
They said that the two factions clashed after an argument over a second-floor verandah office.
The witnesses also said that some of those involved were seen using metal rods and wooden sticks to attack each other.
Supporters of GS Tapash alleged that ten offices belonging to supporters of him were vandalised during the clashes and several windows were broken.
Three laptops were stolen from the trunks of the general secretary’s supporters, they further claimed.
The situation was brought under control after acting Proctor Amzad Ali and Dhaka University BCL President Abid Al Hassan arrived on the scene.
Fourth year Education and Science Institute student Arifur Rahman Arif and fourth year Music Department student Raihan Kabir were administered first aid at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and then transferred to the University Medical Centre. The other victims were given first aid.
Acting Proctor Amzad Ali said that the university authorities will open an investigation into the incident and will take appropriate measures against the guilty.
