Nayem Ashraf, prime accused of Banani double rape case has been sent to seven-day remand in police custody.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate SM Masud Zaman passed the order on Thursday after investigation officer Ismat Ara Ame produced Nayem and urged for 10-day remand.
Earlier, Nayem Ashraf had admitted his involvement in the crime, said the law enforcing authorities on Thursday.
While briefing the press on the development of the sensational case, Monirul Islam, deputy inspector general of Dhaka Metropolitan Police said, “Nayem alias Halim admitted his involvement in the primary interrogation while in custody”.
“We will produce him before the court and seek remand for further interrogation”, Islam added.
Monirul said police will seek 10-day remand. He added that the law enforcers have evidence to ascertain that the rape incident did take place and they would need Nayem in custody for further investigation to gather details regarding the rape case.
“Everyone is equal to the eye of the law”, Monirul said in reply to widespread talks about the influence of their respective families.
Nayem was arrested from Louhojong upazila of Munshiganj on Wednesday night.
Nayem is the fifth suspect arrested in the high profile case. The four others arrested so far are Safat Ahmed, the son of an owner of Apan Jewellers, Safat’s friend Shadman Sakif, the son of Regman Group co-owner Mohammad Hossain Jony, and Safat’s driver ‘Billal’ and bodyguard Rahmat Ali.
Two university students came forth last month with allegations of rape against the accused five. They alleged that they were raped at The Raintree Hotel in Dhaka’s Banani area on March 28 as they went there to attend the birthday party of one of the main accused Safat Ahmed.
