A court in Chapainawabganj on Monday sentenced five people to death for murdering a woman after gang-rape.
Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Ziaur Rahman passed the verdict.
The convicts are Jibon aka Babu, 20, Md Ketab, 35, Nurul Islam, 30, Alamgir Hossain, 36, and Jenarul Daktar, 35.
In 2014, Munira Begum, the 22-year-old victim, was killed after being gang-raped in Shibganj Upazila.
According to the case details, Munira came to the village after her marriage to a man, named only as Rojbul. Later, Munira got involved in an extramarital affair with Jibon in the absence of her husband who worked outside the district.
Munira left her husband’s home with Jibon who took her to a corn field in Chhut Airamari village around 10:30pm.
Jibon and his four allies raped her and dumped her body in the field. The next morning law enforcers recovered the body.
Later, victim’s mother, Sulekha Begum filed the case with Shibganj Police.
In 2015, SI Abul Kalam Azad submitted the chargesheet with eleven accused.
The court cleared six people of the charges on Monday, said Anjuman Ara, state counsel.
